A soft blur behind a subject is known as shallow depth-of-field. Phones imitate this look with software. This can work fine with a photo, but with video the software often finds it difficult to determine the edges of a subject. This results in things like hair and clothing popping in and out of focus and cheapening the look of your production.
On X-M5, Background Defocus mode creates the effect optically by instantly opening the lens to its widest setting. A wide aperture gives you a consistent, soft, out-of-focus background. Because the blur is real and not software interpretation, it holds up on movement around subject edges.
A bright lens helps here. XC35mmF2 has a wide maximum aperture of F2. That separation creates a premium look, and it happens authentically in-camera with no editing needed.
