How GFX100 II Makes Large Format Sport Photography Possible Sport photography requires a lot from a camera, but FUJIFILM GFX100 II is designed to keep up – even while delivering large format 102-megapixel beauty

2 min read

While large format cameras are not typically thought of as suitable for sports photography, FUJIFILM GFX100 II is a powerhouse for its class.

With the right approach, you can take advantage of its outstanding image quality and resolution, even when working with fast-paced action and sports photography subjects.

Professional sport photographer Michael Clark is one of many to have been surprised by GFX100 II's performance. A few years ago, he believed no photographer would sensibly think about working with a larger format camera for sports.

“But GFX100 II is a camera that genuinely competes. The way the camera operates – its size, weight, speed, and handling – is so similar to a high-end full-frame mirrorless. And you’re getting not only 102-megapixel resolution, but superior color and dynamic range; areas where a full-frame camera can’t keep up.”

Here’s a breakdown of GFX100 II’s advanced features, which make large format sport photography entirely possible.

High-Detail Camera Sensor

With its 102-megapixel resolution, you can photograph in incredible detail, which is particularly beneficial for dramatic moments in sports.

Use it to record the finest textures, sweat droplets, or the revealing expressions on athletes’ faces, and add a new level of realism to your images. In sport, the smallest nuances of action and emotion matter.

Another advantage of this high-resolution capability is better cropping flexibility. With fast-moving subjects, you may not always frame the subject perfectly. But you can use GFX100 II’s extra resolution to crop into a smaller section of the frame and still retain enough detail for large prints or high-quality digital images.

Fast, Accurate Autofocus

GFX100 II features a fast Intelligent Hybrid AF system with phase detection points spread across the sensor, offering great subject detection and tracking that’s based on deep-learning AI.

To photograph fast-moving subjects, you can use Continuous AF (AF-C) in Wide/Tracking mode, to ensure the camera is always ready to detect and adjust focus based on the presence of a subject.

You can also customize how AF-C performs, controlling how freely focus will move to newly detected subjects and how fast this shift in focus happens.

There are a number of pre-set modes to choose from, including some ideal for sport subjects. You can rely on dedicated autofocus settings for rapidly accelerating, suddenly appearing, or erratically moving subjects.

8fps High-Speed Burst

A high-resolution, large format camera like GFX100 II typically records a much greater amount of image information than a smaller-sensor camera, meaning the same burst speeds can’t be met. However, it’s exceptionally fast for its class – and in relation to real-world sporting action – at 8fps.

During high-speed use, GFX100 II’s impressive buffer menu decreases viewfinder blackout. You can get blackout-free operation at 5.3fps using the full sensor, or 8.7fps when in a cropped 35mm format mode.

Up to 8.0-Stop In-Body Image Stabilization

GFX100 II features powerful IBIS, providing a benefit of up to 8.0 stops. It effectively compensates for camera shake, freeing you up to work handheld, and is especially useful with telephoto lenses and in low-light situations common to many sports.

Telephoto and Wide-Angle Lens Selection

A selection of exceptional native lenses is important in sport photography, which demands varied coverage, optical precision, and much more.

GFX System cameras bring another unique need for large format sensor coverage. For these reasons, a native FUJINON GF Lens is often the best choice.

Here are some great sports photography lens choices for GFX100 II.

  • FUJINON GF100-200mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR: A versatile zoom lens that allows flexibility in framing across middling distances. It has a linear motor-driven focus system (LM) for rapid, reliable results. Plus, it’s optically stabilized (OIS) and weather-resistant (WR).

  • FUJINON GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR: Perfect for longer-range images, like motorsports or track and field, this lens offers sharp results and a fast-for-class aperture, alongside LM, OIS, and WR benefits. It provides great light-gathering capabilities and beautifully shallow depth-of-field.

  • FUJINON GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR: This is the longest native GFX System lens, delivering far-reaching coverage that will pick out sports subjects where physical proximity is impossible. You can extend reach even further with GF1.4X TC WR teleconverter.

  • FUJINON GF20-35mmF4 R WR: On a large format sensor, this lens offers focal lengths as wide as 16mm as a full-frame equivalent. It’s ideal for providing some much-needed context to sports scenes, or for documenting a wider atmosphere around a subject.

  • FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR: As a 36mm equivalent for full-frame, this lens gives you a widely usable documentarian perspective, which many value highly in a sports context. It also has a wide F2.8 aperture, which is functionally faster than the same aperture on a smaller sensor.
