How to Use FUJIFILM X half™ Film Camera Mode Ever wanted to combine the joy of analog photography with the performance of a digital camera? With FUJIFILM X half, you can!

5 min read

FUJIFILM X half brings fun, nostalgic camera features back into a modern process. Film Camera mode is up there with the most exciting, so let’s explore it.

This setting emulates the process of analog photography, back in the days when photos couldn’t be seen until a whole roll of film was finished and developed.

Stay engaged in the moment, focus on making beautiful photos rather than reviewing them, and enjoy the reveal when you’re all done.

Starting X half Film Camera Mode

Film Camera mode locks in whichever Film Simulation or filter you start with, so choose an option that suits the moment.

When you’re ready, swipe the touchscreen from top to bottom, then tap FILM CAMERA MODE. On the INITIAL SETUP screen, you can decide how your roll is made.

Choose between 36, 54, and 72 images. It’s best to finish a roll, so pick a number you’re confident you won’t need to abandon early. You can also apply a nostalgic date stamp here.

Finally, choose your exposure mode.

AUTO makes all settings automatic, but you can still make images brighter or darker using the Exposure Compensation dial.

A puts you in Aperture Priority mode, meaning you can manually adjust aperture using the Aperture Ring.

Tap START to begin your roll.

Creating a Roll

Film Camera mode is incredibly simple to use. Just compose through the viewfinder, then press the shutter. Before you make your next image, you need to pull the Frame Advance Lever.

There are a few icons on screen to help you create exactly as you want.

Tap AF MF to toggle between autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF). When using manual focus, adjustments are made using the Focus Ring on the lens, with a distance scale at the bottom of the touchscreen to help.

Tap DATE to turn a date stamp on or off. When the indicator is lit up orange, date stamp is on.

At the top-right of the touchscreen, there’s a counter to show how many images you’ve made. Remaining battery and aperture settings are also shown nearby.

There’s also a Frame Advance Lever icon, which will be illuminated to confirm you’re ready to make your next image. If you haven’t pulled the Frame Advance Lever, the icon and an orange LED next to the viewfinder will blink as a reminder.

Here’s a tip: X half will remain in Film Camera mode, even if it’s turned off. You just need to keep the charged battery in the camera.

Developing Film Camera Mode Images

Now here’s the fun part. When you’ve made all the images on your roll, X half will close out of Film Camera mode and you’ll be ready to review your images.

If you want to quit early, double tap the vertical sub LCD. Your images will be saved, but you won’t be able to return later and complete the same roll.

Your roll of images won’t be visible in-camera, so you won’t see them by pressing PLAY like normal. The most exciting way to reveal them is to ‘develop’ them using X half App.

Open the app and connect X half, then tap Film Images to browse the rolls you’ve created. When you select one, all the roll’s images will appear – including a digital contact sheet which combines them together.

X half App will automatically save rolls to your device’s image library as they develop. You can also view them in-app at any time, either in a Gallery, Album, or Contact Sheet view.

Alternatively, when you’ve finished a roll, you can transfer it to a device using an SD card reader or USB-C cable. Find each roll – and its images – in its own unique folder.
